Student Essay Contests for Nervous Conditions

To enter either contest, please submit THREE copies of your entry. Put your name, current address, phone number, and email address in the upper right hand corner of the first page of each copy. Please bring your submissions to the English Department Office, Robinson A 487. Contests are open to all currently-enrolled GMU students.

Personal Essay or Creative Work

Nervous Conditions examines the experiences of characters who are positioned between competing cultural identities and allegiances. Undergraduates may submit either a personal essay or a creative work that explores the experiences of individuals feeling similar tensions between competing cultural traditions in their own lives. The essay or creative work should be no more than 2500 words (10 pages, double-spaced).

Prize: $100 and publication in the GMU Review
Deadline: May 1, 2009

Graduate students may also submit entries for this contest (2500 words maximum). Graduate submissions will be judged separately from the undergraduate entries. The winning graduate work will be awarded $100.

Undergraduate Critical Essay

Undergraduates may submit one critical essay each of no more than 2500 words (10 pages, double-spaced), on any topic related to Nervous Conditions. Submissions may have been written to fulfill course assignments, or independently outside of class.

Prize: $100
