Writing Contests

There are two writing contests for Nat Turner. To enter either contest, please submit three copies of your entry, with your name, current address, phone number, and email address in the upper right hand corner of the first page of each copy. Please bring your submissions to the English Department Office, Robinson A 487. Contests are open to all currently-enrolled GMU students.

Personal Essay or Creative Work

Undergraduates may submit a non-fiction essay or creative work (such as their own comic) which intersects with some of the dominant themes of Kyle Baker’s Nat Turner—oppression, rebellion, history, memory, loss, heroism, and so on. Essays should be no more than five pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-point type, with one inch margins (1250 words).

Prize: $100 and publication in the GMU Review
Deadline: May 1, 2010

Graduate students may also submit entries for this contest (2500 words maximum). Graduate submissions will be judged separately from the undergraduate entries. The winning graduate work will be awarded $100.

Undergraduate Critical Essay

Undergraduates may submit one critical essay each of no more than 2500 words (10 pages, double-spaced), on any topic related to Nat Turner. Submissions may have been written to fulfill course assignments, or independently outside of class.
